1. Maintain a Positive Attitude – Let’s realize that life is only 10% of what happens to us and 90% how we react to it. We’re responsible for our own actions and attitudes, and changing them when appropriate. When you’re around people/things that are uplifting and positive, you feel that way. You have more confidence in yourself, and know you can change whatever needs changing. If you can make your workplace such a place you’ll find happier workers and higher production. 2. Leave Personal Troubles Home - Everyone has problems, but they don’t belong at work. Turn your attention and energy entirely to your on-the-job tasks. This will actually be good for you because you’ll get a mental break from your troubles.
3. Create Positive Affirmations - The reason for writing goals for your business is the same as creating positive affirmations on paper. What your eyes see and ears hear, your mind will believe. Try it! After you’ve written them down, read them aloud to yourself – and do it every morning when you get into work. You’ll be amazed at what happens. Come up with a set of new ones every month. Statements such as, “I’m an important and valuable person,” or “I know I’ll make good use of my time today.” Repeating them out loud everyday at a set time will help reinforce positive actions.

4. Make Sure Break Times Are Really Break Times - This is an area where most bosses/entrepreneurs fall down. You become so intense about the project or situation you’re working on that you don’t ease up. Thinking that it’ll be solved in the next few seconds, and then you’ll get a cup of coffee can lead you right up to quitting time. Regularly adhering to a specified break schedule, even if you’re the boss, releases the tension. If you work on a computer this is even a greater problem because before you realize it – you’ve been working in that same position for hours. The best answer to this is to set yourself a reminder on your appointment calendar for every 2 hours, and let the computer reminder chime send you the alert to move around.

5. Exercise, Exercise, Exercise - I know that lately it seems that “exercise” is the cure-all to every physical ailment or your love life, but despite that there is some truth to that ugly word. By “exercise” I don’t mean that you should go out and join a gym and spend your lunch-time, 3-days-a-week there working out. What is really beneficial and workable is that at those chiming alerts from your computer, get up and walk around your desk or room. Maybe go outside and get the mail and enjoy the sunlight (if you’re an entrepreneur that has a home office), or just get up and do a few stretches. Concentrated, tense thinking – typing - plotting plans - or whatever your work, makes all those muscles tighten up and knot up. Then when we move we “ooh” and “ouch” because we’ve knotted up into a ball of tension. Periodic stretching, even at our desk, or just getting up and walking over to the window and getting a different view can help. One of the greatest disservice modern business d├ęcor has done to us, is making our offices pristine, sleek, unencumbered spaces. There is nothing more relaxing than getting up from your desk and walking over to a peaceful, serene, seascape or pastoral painting and just drinking it in visually. Momentarily transporting your mind out of work and into that place does wonders. A few good paintings and less shiny chrome in offices would benefit us all.

The very meaning of the word motivation means “to move”. Defined as the internal factor that induces behavior and gives a new direction, motivation is integral to everyone’s life. Motivation theory described the various processes that talk about the reasons (why, how, what etc) that affect an induce behavior patterns in all of us to feel motivated to do something.

Considered as one of the most important areas of study in the organizational behavior field, motivation theory has two distinct categories – content theories and process theories. Despite the fact that there are several motivation theories espoused by many psychologists, not one of them is accepted universally.

Some of the pioneers in content theory of motivation, which focuses on the internal factors that channelize human behavior, include Abraham Maslow, Alderfer, Herzeberg, and McClelland. Motivation theory such as the very famous Hierarchy of Needs by Maslow, the ERG theory by Alderfer, motivator-hygiene theory by Herzeberg also known as the dual factors theory by Herzeberg, and learned needs or three-needs theory by McClelland are some of the major content theories.

Of the above mentioned motivation theories, the content theory by Maslow on the hierarchy of human needs is perhaps the most known and popular. It talks about five levels of basic needs, which are categorized as physiological needs, safety and security needs, self esteem needs, love needs, and needs for self actualization.

Similar to the hierarchy of needs by Maslow, is the ERG theory that explains the existence, relatedness and growth needs in human beings. While the dual factors theory of Herzeberg talks about specific factors at the workplace that can help in job satisfaction. On the other hand, the Thematic Aptitude Test (TAT), a projective technique as part of the learned needs motivation theory by McClelland, tries to evaluate people and their aptitude based on the three main needs that are: power, affiliation, and achievement. It would be safe to conclude that McClelland’s motivation theory results indicate that people who have a higher need of power take action in ways that tend to influence the behavior of other people and those around them.

A motivation theory attempts to decode the reasons that motivate people to do different tasks and become successful in them. While different people have different thinking behaviors, the immediate environment, the background of the person and other factors are the key reasons. Perhaps that’s why Maslow’s motivation theory states that a man’s behavior is controlled and affected by the internal as well as the external factors. This also means that man has the significant ability to make choices in his life and exercise his free-will.

Theories such as Adam’s equity theory, Vroom’s expectancy theory, goal-setting motivation theory, and reinforcement motivation theory etc suggest that when people need something or desire something, they are motivated to achieve it. If you want something really bad, your desire and your need should be motivation enough for you to achieve it!

Any motivation theory can be applied to a cross-section of people and businesses. The underlying principle of every theory is that human beings require their needs to be met. When these needs are met, a certain balance is achieved and the person starts to respond favorably to his immediate environment and the results are more than satisfactory.

Motivation is a funny thing, some days we seem to have it, others we don't.

Why is this? And what can you do to increase it when it fails you?

It's easier to find if you're doing something that you truly want to do, but even if you are on that path, at times it will still be difficult, there will still be hills and plateaus to overcome.

So, what can you do to keep you on the motivated highway?

First, let's look at the meaning of the word, it comes from the word motive or defined in the dictionary: "causing, or tending to cause, motion".

That's an interesting way to look at it, what causes motion to set in place?

When I write and I feel that today is not a particularly creative one I sometimes just start with no particular idea in mind, perhaps I only have a hint of a feeling, but it's not always the case.

I just begin with a rough idea and see what comes out of the mix, nine times out of ten the beginning sets off the desire and within minutes it's all gushing out freely.

This is one step to tackle lack of motivation, just start whatever it is you mean to do and do it for five minutes, you'll see that after that time your desire has been ignited and you're off.

It could be the mundane tasks such as cleaning the house, sorting out paperwork and bills, painting the walls, fixing the garden or the more fulfilling ones like working on your hobbies, organizing a party or booking a holiday.

It doesn't matter, the effect is the same in all cases: Start it and nine times out of ten you'll get so much done without even thinking about it that you'll be so satisfied with yourself and feel a great sense of achievement.

However, what about the other one in ten times? You start something, your spirits are down, you have no motive and it never comes. You're at a dead end.

What I do in these circumstances is stop.

Yes, that's right.

End what you're doing and go and do something else, like go for a walk, watch a movie, see friends or cycle your bike. If you're stuck in the office then it could be just going and having a quiet break and refreshment or a walk outside to get some fresh air.

If the desire is not there, if those creative juices are not flowing, don't force them to come, take a rain check and do something else.

You'll find that the motivation tends to return, if it doesn't come straightaway, you'll probably find that a new desire for something else comes along and you'll begin that instead.

Great, don't worry, just do that then and you'll come round full circle and go back to the original task, but this time you'll have more energy and you'll zap the task more quickly.

Another way I deal with lack of motivation is to use the classic 'let's be a pet' method which is to use rewards to create incentive.

It's similar to celebrating our small private victories or daily, personal achievements - we should all get into the habit of celebrating our accomplishments, however small they may be.

Taking lack of motivation as an example: before you embark on that long 'put off' task, say to yourself that if "I get X done, I'll treat myself to Y".

That way you'll actually have something to look forward to and it has the strange effect of making the task seem more enjoyable.

Just use simple treats, things that you like to do; we're all different so examples could include watching a DVD, going to see a movie at the cinema, having a cafe mocha with LOTS of cream, eating a favourite snack like ice cream or chocolate (of course, don't over indulge, but I believe a little bit of what you like is good for you), reading your favourite trashy magazine or listening to your favourite music at full volume.

It's up to you, go with what you like but the point is, you'll incite a burning desire to get things in motion if you can visualise the light at the end of the tunnel.

I would just like to end by looking at something that may be troubling you more and that's long term lack of motivation that you may be suffering from.

It could be with your job, relationship or your life in general, how can you tackle this and set the wheels in motion for change?

In a way it's not much dissimilar with the above, just that it's on a larger scale, it essentially concerns doing what you really want to do in life.

If you're in a career that just doesn't resonate with you as a person or you're in a relationship with somebody and there is this niggling feeling at the back of your mind that's telling you that this "isn't right" then it's perhaps a time to start looking at finding your true purpose in life or looking deep inside your soul.

What makes you tick?

Is a major career change the solution? Do you need to be in this particular relationship to feel good about yourself or should you be finding out how to be happy without outside influences?

Let go of your fear, connect to who you are and most importantly of all, put it into action.
